19-year-old charged in Perth cheque scam

A scam involving fake cheques has led to charges against a 19-year-old Markham woman.

Perth OPP began investigating the incident early last October after a Perth East business was defrauded of nearly $5,000. Police alleged a woman wrote fraudulent cheques to acquire the money from the unnamed business.

As a result of the six-month probe, police arrested a 19-year-old woman from Markham. She is charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and laundering proceeds of crime. The woman is scheduled to appear in Stratford court on May 26.

"Although fraud investigations can be lengthy to investigate, the Perth County OPP is committed to all victims of crime and to completing wholesome and thorough investigations, police said in a statement released on Wednesday.

Police advise anyone who has fallen victim to a scam to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
