Local leaders recognized at Clean Energy Frontier Program Awards

Individuals and groups were recognized by the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII) this week for what it calls "exceptional contributions to the local economy and clean energy sector."

The organization held its second Clean Energy Frontier Program Awards in Ottawa on Wednesday.

"The honours celebrate individuals, teams and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding dedication to advancing clean energy innovation, economic growth and community engagement in the region," said a release from the NII.

Jeff Loney, Manager of Economic Development for Bruce County, was awarded the Paulette Peirol Memorial Award for Excellence in Economic Development.

"This recognition is a testament to the dedication of the entire Bruce County team and our community partners, who work daily in supporting our clean energy sector," said Loney in a release. "Bruce County is committed to continuing to drive forward opportunities across the full spectrum of clean energy technology."

Georgian College's Owen Sound Campus was honoured with the Community Clean Energy Champion Award for its workforce development.

"Georgian’s Owen Sound Campus plays a critical role in localizing, developing and retaining the highly skilled workforce needed to power Ontario's clean energy future," said Dr. Dave Shorey, Executive Director of Georgian College's Owen Sound Campus. We are proud to be a full-service campus deeply embedded in the sector, responding to its evolving needs, co-creating solutions and preparing the next generation of leaders and professionals."

There was also an award given to Willing to Listen, a community-led initiative that fostered informed discussions about the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for used nuclear fuel.
