Suspected driver in fatal Owen Sound hit-and-run surrenders to police

Charges have been laid in a hit-and-run in Owen Sound last weekend that left a pedestrian dead.

Owen Sound police have announced a 21-year-old man turned himself in after seeking legal advice. After he surrendered to police, officers searched a home in the city's west-end where they found what they called "key evidence" related to the May 10 hit-and-run. While police did not confirm what that evidence was, on Tuesday it was announced the 2018 white Honda Civic believed to have been involved had been located and was to undergo forensic examination.

Police had been looking for the vehicle, and its driver, since a man walking near the intersection of 5th Street East and 5th Avenue East was hit around 3 a.m. last Saturday. The driver took off after the collision. The pedestrian died from his injuries. His name has not been released.

Devon Desborough, 21, of Owen Sound is charged with failing to stop at a crash causing death and dangerous driving causing death. He was held in police custody pending a bail hearing.

Police continue to ask residents and businesses in the area to review camera footage, including doorbell and dashcam recordings, from the time around the collision. Anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, is asked to contact Detective Geoff Bridgeman by phone at 519-376-1234 ext. 1189 or email gbridgeman@owensoundpolice.com. Tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
