Push on to get hundreds of local kids to summer camp

With a mission of sending hundreds of kids from Goderich to Point Pelee and Windsor to Woodstock to camp this summer, the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario is asking the public for help.

The not-for-profit has launched its annual Fill the Bus campaign. It aims to raise $250,000, which would be enough to provide 1,250 area children with access to YMCA summer day camps. The group hopes with financial assistance from the community it will be able to send 38 school buses, each filled with 33 kids to the camps.

“Every child deserves a summer filled with fun, friendships, and new experiences,” YMCA Southwestern Ontario CEO Andrew Lockie said in a statement. “At the same time, parents need a trusted, affordable option for summer care. Our camps provide both—helping kids grow while giving families peace of mind.”

According to the YMCA, the summer camps help children build confidence, develop social skills, and stay active in a supportive, values-based environment. Each $200 donation sends one child to camp.

"As a charity, we rely on the generosity of our community—donors, sponsors, and supporters—to make the life-changing experience of camp accessible to all,” said Christina Harley, YMCA's vice president of development.

She added the non-profit has already received a $35,000 donation from Mainstreet Credit Union, which secures a spot at camp for 175 kids.

"There are still many more families who need our support. Join us in making camp possible for even more kids this year,” said Harley.

YMCA of Southwestern Ontario operates two overnight camps - one in Point Pelee National Park and the other on Beausoleil Island in Muskoka.
