Huron-Kinloss receives funds as site selection wraps up

The Township of Huron Kinloss is getting three quarters of a million dollars from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization as engagement over a proposed deep geological repository in the region ends.

The NWMO says it will give the Township $750,000 to support its ongoing commitment to the well-being of the community.

The organization sent a letter to Mayor Don Murray that was presented to council this week.

In it, Joe Heil, Vice President of Municipal Relations wrote that although the region was not selected to host a deep geological repository last year, the NWMO wanted to recognize the Township for its active participation and contributions throughout the process.

The funds are to be used to support initiatives such as youth and elder programs, sustainability projects, economic development, and energy efficiency.

This marks the end of the Township’s engagement in the site selection process, and Council expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the national dialogue.
