Families in Central Huron can share their heritage at the upcoming "Around the World in Central Huron" cultural food and beverage show.
The event will occur on Saturday, April 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Clinton Arena Libro Hall. Visitors will receive a passport to have stamped as they explore each booth, making for a global culinary experience.
Angela Smith, community improvement coordinator for Central Huron, said participants will represent different countries by preparing and serving traditional dishes that celebrate their culture.
"We all came from somewhere historically, you know, whether we're newcomers, or we've been here for generations," added Smith. "I think it's important to celebrate all of those things and be aware of our differences. It's just fun to travel, and the best way, I think, is through our stomachs sharing each other's culture by food."
"For those families that have been here for generations, it's also a way of not losing those traditions, and I think it's important to keep those alive and not lose the recipe." she continued.
To support participating families, organizers are offering $150 to $200 per family to help with grocery expenses.
"So we're hoping for families to come and decorate a space and provide a sample of the favorite food," Smith explained. "We are providing funding for the groceries so that no family is burdened unnecessarily with the grocery cost."
Booth spaces are 10x10 feet, and families are encouraged to decorate them with flags, memorabilia, traditional clothing, and other cultural displays.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for families to share their stories and celebrate our community's cultural diversity through food,” Smith pointed out.
