Grey Bruce volunteer receives Coronation Medal

A dedicated volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce has been awarded the prestigious King Charles III’s Coronation Medal in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the community.

Gary Varsava was recognized for contributing over 1,150 days working at Habitat building sites. He played a vital role in the construction of 63 homes across Grey and Bruce counties since 2002.

His commitment also extended beyond construction, serving 12 years on Habitat’s board of directors, including as treasurer. Currently, Varsava is an integral member of the organization’s Critical Repair Program, which ensures safe and affordable housing for those in need.

“Gary's dedication and positive spirit have been an inspiration to everyone around him,” said Greg Fryer, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce. “His hard work and generosity have made a lasting impact on countless families and our community.”

Varsava’s volunteerism also reached beyond Canadian borders. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, he supported rebuilding efforts in New Orleans through Habitat for Humanity Canada.

"Gary just loves contributing his skills," added Fryer. "He has many home building skills that he loves to pass on to others, including our other volunteers and help them with their work in building homes with us."

Habitat Grey Bruce has served 138 adults and 212 children since 1987, helping families achieve homeownership through no-down-payment, no-interest mortgages.

The medal, awarded to 30,000 Canadians, honours individuals who have made a significant impact through volunteerism. For more information or to learn how to support Habitat’s mission, visit habitatgreybruce.ca
