Scammers posing as Stratford police

Perth County residents are being warned about fraudsters pretending to be from the Stratford Police Service in order to get money or personal information.

Stratford police say they received more than 40 reports on Monday from people who were called by a number that displayed as being from the Stratford Police Service. The fraudsters used a variety of methods to try to obtain cash and/or personal information from their intended victims. This included telling them they had a warrant for their arrest and requesting money to support crime prevention initiatives.

"The Stratford Police Service would like to remind members of our community that at no time will you receive a phone call of this nature from the police, or any other government agency," police said in a statement. "The Stratford Police Service will never call you asking for money or your personal information."

None of the people who reported being contacted lost any cash or disclosed any personal information in the scam, police said. However, police are are encouraging anyone who did fall victim to the scam to call them at 519-271-4141 ext. 2.
