The Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre will mark Archives Awareness Week with a special event highlighting the experiences of Bruce County’s 160th Battalion soldiers during the First World War.
On April 12 at 2:00 p.m., military historian and researcher Kent Kraemer will present 'Bruce in Battle: Life in the 160th Battalion.' Kraemer, who has extensively documented the Battalion’s history through the 160th Bruce Battalion Facebook page since 2015, will share stories of soldiers like “Paddy” Pettigrew and Robert Clarke Rowand, the most decorated member of the Battalion.
Attendees will also gain insight into Kraemer’s research process, including his use of the Bruce in Khaki newspaper and the role of the museum’s archives in preserving these historical narratives.
Following the presentation, guests can join archives staff for a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum’s archival storage area, where rarely seen artifacts will be showcased. Additionally, a tour guide will be stationed in the military gallery to provide further stories of Bruce County’s military history.
Admission to the event is free, but seating is limited. Pre-registration is required at brucemuseum.ca or by calling 519-797-2080.
The Archives & Research Room will also offer free admission during Ontario’s Archives Awareness Week, running from April 7 to April 12.
