Local candidates kick off campaigns

Several federal election candidates in midwestern Ontario have hit the ground running.

 

With Prime Minister Mark Carney having announced an election for late-April on Sunday, a number of local people seeking federal seats have announced their candidacies.

In Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, Alex Ruff of the Conservative Party of Canada is seeking re-election. So far, his opponents include Anne Marie Reid-Watson of the Liberal Party of Canada and Pavel Smolko of the People's Party of Canada. The New Democratic Party has not yet announced a candidate, while the Green Party will select its candidate at a nomination meeting on Sunday, March 30.

In Huron-Bruce, Conservative Benn Lobb is running as the incumbent. The Liberal Party has announced that James Rice will be its candidate. Melanie Burrett is running for the NDP, while the Green Party has nominated Gregory J. MacLean. As of Monday, March 24, the People's Party of Canada does not have a candidate running in Huron-Bruce.

In Perth-Wellington, incumbent John Nater of the Conservative Party of Canada is running again. He'll will be challenged by David Mackey of the Liberal Party, Kevin Kruchkywic of the NDP, and Wayne Baker of the People's Party of Canada. The Green Party has yet to announce a candidate in Perth-Wellington.

Election day is Monday, April 28.
