Bruce County shares tariff strategy to support local business

Bruce County shared its strategy to support local businesses and mitigate the economic impact of tariffs on the region at Thursday's council meeting.

Council received reports from its Director of Government Relations and Commissioner of Community Development on key actions the County can take to respond to the tariffs.

The strategy includes making changes to municipal procurement, launching a campaign to encourage residents and visitors to support local businesses and advocating higher levels of government for more support and flexibility to buy Canadian.

Warden Luke Charbonneau said the strategy was a sound one.

"We have a good combination of resolutions here," he said. "We have limited tools as a County to address such a huge thing as international tariffs, but I think we're using all the tools at our disposal to help our business community. I know council will remain flexible to do more things if possible down the road."

Aaron Stauch, Director Government Relations, told council that it wouldn't be difficult to alter the policies if the trade situation changes as well.

"We can easily adjust based on emerging situations and it's stuff that we can easily turn around and revert back to previous practices if that makes sense at that point in time," he said. "What we've tried to do is take a measured response while this is still a very uncertain situation."

Businesses and residents are encouraged to visit Business to Bruce’s Tariff Support Hub for resources and guidance.
