Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound will remain in Progressive Conservative hands as Paul Vickers has won the riding in the 2025 Ontario provincial election.
Vickers, a former Meaford councillor and local farmer, secured victory over Liberal candidate Selwyn Hicks, a former Grey County warden. The win extends the PCs' hold on the riding, following longtime MPP Bill Walker's tenure before Rick Byers, who chose not to seek re-election.
Vickers' win leaves Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound with farmers at both levels of government, along with MP Alex Ruff. Vickers says he's ready for this responsibility.
"I think it's important for the people of Queen's Park, they don't understand farming as much as I do. I've lived it my whole life. I'm hoping that I can make sure they understand how important and how personal farming is to me," he said.
Vickers campaigned on maintaining strong local representation at Queen’s Park, advocating for rural infrastructure investment, healthcare improvements, and support for the agricultural sector.
Vickers says he's looking forward to continuing the PC's control over the riding.
"I didn't want to be the person to not be able to hold the riding. That gives you a lot of motivation," he said. "Fear is a great motivator when you're a politician....it's all about getting something done. Don't just sit there and take up a seat. Let's move the needle, and let's get something done."
Hicks, who placed second, focused his platform on affordability, housing, and improved healthcare services for the region.
