Kincardine resident loses 100K in cryptocurrency scam

A Kincardine resident has fallen victim to a cryptocurrency scam, losing approximately $100,000 in what police are calling an elaborate online fraud.

According to the South Bruce OPP, the victim encountered an investment company through an online advertisement and engaged in multiple transactions over the past few months. They regularly communicated with a representative who facilitated the investments. However, when the victim attempted to withdraw their funds, they discovered their account was empty.

The case has now been handed over to the South Bruce OPP Crime Unit for further investigation.

Authorities are warning the public to be extra cautious when engaging in cryptocurrency investments, as scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre provides resources on fraud prevention and can be reached at 1-888-495-8501 or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the South Bruce OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.cstip.ca, where tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
