North Perth announces date for official unveiling of Memorial Arena Park

The Municipality of North Perth has announced the date for the unveiling of the Memorial Arena Park.

Following the demolition of the old Listowel Memorial Arena, plans were set in motion to set up something to honour the site of the tragedy that took place on February 28, 1959.

Jimmy Hastings, Kenneth Hymers, Ricky Kaufman, Jackie Rheubottom, Bryan Seehaver, Barry Smith, Keith Wight, and Ken McLeod perished when the roof of the arena suddenly collapsed under the weight of a heavy snowfall.

Now, after extensive planning between the town and the Memorial Arena Park 59 (MAP59) Committee, the park site will be unveiled on February 28, 2025, with a 45 minute ceremony to commemorate the victims lost that day, and the town's ongoing perseverance and commitment to remember and honour those lost.

Following the ceremony at 380 Maitland Avenue North, the municipality will be offering refreshments at Parkview Gardens, located at 565 Elizabeth Street East in Listowel.
