The United States will introduce tariffs on steel and aluminum.
President Donald Trump made the announcement on Sunday while on Air Force One, travelling to attend the Super Bowl.
On Monday afternoon, Trump signed an order imposing 25 per cent steel and aluminum tariffs.
"This is a big deal," said Trump while signing the order Monday in the Oval Office, according to NBC News. "The beginning of making America rich again."
Trump also said they’ll be an announcement either Tuesday or Wednesday about reciprocal tariffs.
These announcements come a few days after the U.S. and Canada announced a month-long delay on 25 per cent tariffs on imported goods.
Meanwhile, Trump also told reporters he still believes Canada should become the U.S.’s 51st state.
He claimed Canada’s “not viable as a country.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not publicly responded as he's currently in France for a global summit.
Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh issued a response while in Windsor on Monday evening.
"Donald Trump has unleashed a trade war on Canada and our workers," said Singh. "We can’t let it go unanswered, and we can’t let working Canadians pay the price for Trump’s attack. Workers are worried they’ll lose their jobs. Families are worried about how they’ll keep putting food on the table. It’s urgent that we get financial supports into the hands of impacted people."
