Strong winds to blow across parts of midwestern Ontario Thursday night

After a snowy and icy start to the day, parts of midwestern Ontario will have to deal with a very windy night.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Huron County, North Grey County, South Bruce County, and the Bruce Peninsula, warning that southwesterly winds will shift to northwesterly wind gusts up to 80 kilometres an hour Thursday night. That is strong enough to toss loose objects and snap tree limbs, the national weather agency advised.

The strong windy weather comes in the wake of a cold front. The temperature combined with the windchill will make it feel like minus 18 C overnight.

Earlier in the day, Huron, along with Perth County and North Wellington County, saw a freezing drizzle advisory put in place. The icy drizzle mixed with light snow to make for slick conditions outside. Roadways, walkways, and parking lots become coated in a hard-to-detect layer of ice. That slowed the morning commute and led to a few bus cancellations and delays, particularly in the Stratford and St. Marys areas.

According to Environment Canada, the freezing drizzle/snow mix will come to an end in the afternoon, while strong winds won't ease until Friday morning.
