Nuclear Innovation Institute’s Energy Co-op Program celebrates new graduates

January marked a significant achievement for 24 high school students who completed the Nuclear Innovation Institute’s (NII) Energy Co-op program.

This hands-on, skill-building term has continued to ignite excitement for clean energy careers, while also opening up valuable opportunities within the sector in Bruce and Grey counties.

Now in its second year, the NII Energy Co-op focuses on in-demand trades and essential soft skills, all designed to prepare students for success in the workforce.

"For sure, I learned a crazy diverse amount of social, hard and soft skills," said Alex, a Grade 11 student who participated in the program. "Through this co-op opportunity, I became a better person, student and worker."

The program is a unique 17-week educational experience in partnership with the Bluewater District School Board. Unlike traditional co-op programs, where one student is placed with one employer, the NII Energy Co-op exposes students to nearly 20 different careers across the clean energy industry. Career fields explored include construction, welding, emergency management, and robotics, among others.

"As we wrap up another semester of the NII Energy Co-op, we celebrate the incredible achievements of our students and their growing passion for the clean energy sector," said Tracy Murray, Senior Director of Workforce & Partnership Development at NII. "Workforce development is crucial to ensuring that we have skilled, motivated individuals who are ready to lead the transition to a sustainable future. By providing youth with hands-on experience and connecting them with industry mentors, we’re empowering the next generation to innovate and thrive in the clean energy workforce."

The program has already made a significant impact, with over 10,000 student hours logged and contributions from 49 students and over 20 industry partners. Looking ahead, NII is excited for the next term, which begins in February and is already full.

NII is grateful for the support from industry partners in the energy sector, local communities, and the Bluewater District School Board. Founding Members of NII include AtkinsRéalis, Bruce Power, BWXT Canada, Cameco, E.S. Fox, Kinectrics, Power Workers’ Union, and the Town of Saugeen Shores.

NII encourages companies to get involved in shaping the future of the energy sector by becoming Energy Co-op industry partners or program sponsors. By mentoring and inspiring the next generation of leaders, companies gain access to fresh talent eager to learn and grow.
