Perth OPP warn of 'soft shoulders' after transport overturns

The importance of finding a safe spot to pull your vehicle over was highlighted north of Stratford Monday where a transport truck overturned after pulling onto an unexpectedly soft shoulder.

Perth OPP were called to the incident on Perth Line 44 near Perth Road 135. Officers determined the transport had pulled onto the shoulder of the roadway, where it sunk into the ground enough to cause it to flip onto its side.

No one was hurt and no charges were laid, police said.

The crash kept the roadway closed for several hours on Monday. Crews were back on scene Tuesday to continue the clean up.

Police are using the incident as a way to educate the public about soft shoulders.

"All it takes is an inch too far and you may find yourself and your vehicle upside down in the ditch with thousands of dollars in damages. If you need to pull over, take care to find a safe location," police said.

Safe locations include a road with a wide shoulder, lane way, rest stop or parking lot.

Drivers are additionally reminded that the snow this time of year can alter a driver's perception of the width of the shoulder of roads.
