The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has terminated an investigation into injuries suffered by a man in Walkerton OPP custody in October.
According to a statement from SIU Director Joseph Martino, if the man did suffer a serious injury, it would have been a result of repeatedly punching the cell walls.
On the morning of October 13, 2024, the man was arrested in Paisley for impaired driving. He was then transported to the Walkerton Detachment and lodged in the cells.
The SIU says video footage showed the man repeatedly punched the cell wall and when it appeared he might have suffered an injury to his right hand, he was transported to hospital.
According to the SIU, the man did not avail himself of an interview, and they were unable to access his medical records to ascertain whether he did suffer a serious injury.
"On this record, there being an insufficient showing of ‘serious injury’ within the terms of the SIU’s jurisdiction, and patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer was concerned, the file has been closed," wrote Martino.
