Midwestern Ontario residents dealing with more heavy snow

Drivers will want to give themselves some extra time to get where they are going on Thursday.

Roads across midwestern Ontario are snow covered and slick due to overnight snowfall, with more snow on the way throughout the day into Friday morning.

Environment Canada has Huron and south Bruce counties under a winter weather travel advisory. Lake effect snow could bring 5 to 10 more centimetres to the area by early in the evening.

"Stronger snow squalls will develop as winds become northwesterly tonight and Friday bringing additional accumulations," the national weather agency stated.

A snow squall watch has also been issued for the two areas, as well as north Grey County, for Thursday night into Friday morning. Environment Canada stated that the lake enhanced snow is expected to transition into strong localized snow squalls as winds become northwesterly, bringing additional accumulation totals of 15 to 30 centimetres.

In Bruce Peninsula, a snow squall warning is still in effect with another 10 to 15 centimetres possible by Thursday afternoon.

Southwesterly wind gusts will create blowing snow, especially over exposed areas, that will reduce visibility significantly at times.

Drivers are being told to expect dangerous conditions and to adjust their travel plans accordingly. Those who do choose to hit the roads are reminded to turn on vehicle exterior lighting systems and maintain a safe following distance.

For the fourth day in a row, school bus cancellations were issued. Nearly all buses in Huron-Perth were cancelled for the day, while in Grey Bruce, bus cancellations included all for Teeswater, Lucknow, Ripley, Kincardine, Walkerton, Southampton, and Wiarton.

There were also some schools closed due to the weather. The full list of closures and cancellations can be found on the CKNX closures page.

The snowy conditions also led Huron-Kinloss to declare a significant weather event, meaning it would take crews longer than usual to clear roads.

A break from the heavy snow could come Friday with flurries forecast to end in the morning.
