Stratford police crackdown on unlicensed rideshare drivers

Stratford police are reminding unlicensed rideshare companies or individuals operating in the city doing so could lead to fines under the taxi bylaw.

Police said an unspecified number of unlicensed rideshare operators have recently been busted and are facing charges.

Under Stratford's taxi bylaw, anyone running a vehicle-for-hire business in the city must hold a valid taxi licence and insurance. Failing to obtain the licence and insurance could result in fines and charges.

Licensed taxis can be identified by a valid taxi number plate on the exterior of the vehicle, while a licensed driver can be identified by an official photo taxi driver license which is typically displayed inside the vehicle, police said.

Anyone who is aware of an illegal rideshare operator conducting business in Stratford is asked to call police at 519-271-4141 extension 2.
