UPDATE; Snow squalls continue to blast parts of midwestern Ontario

Portions of midwestern Ontario could see up to 25 centimetres of additional snowfall on Wednesday.

According to Environment Canada, lake effect snow from Lake Huron will continue to fall throughout the day with Huron County, northern Grey County, and southern Bruce County under a snow squall warning. The warning for southern Perth County has ended.

The exact accumulation totals vary depending on which county you are in. Southern Huron County is expected to see the most snowfall with 15 to 25 centimetres possible. There is a chance some parts of that region could see higher amounts if snow squalls become stationary, Environment Canada said.

Northern Huron, southern Bruce, and northern Grey could see between 10 to 20 centimetres by Wednesday night. The bulk of the snow in northern Grey is expected to fall between Meaford and Craigleith.

The area set to receive the least amount of lake effect snow is southern Perth. Environment Canada is calling for accumulation totals of 5 to 10 centimetres that will mainly affect the areas from Mitchell southward.

Despite the difference in snowfall totals, all of the regions being hit by snow squalls will experience deteriorating road conditions.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Road closures are possible," Environment Canada said. "If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance."

The snow led to numerous school bus cancellations in Huron-Perth and Grey-Bruce as well as the closure of St. Michael Catholic Secondary School and St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School. The full list of bus cancellations can be found on our closures page.

Squalls are expected to ease to lake effect flurries early in the evening.
