The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sounding the alarm on cryptocurrency investment frauds after a series of local incidents have resulted in residents losing over $190,000 since October 2024.
According to the OPP, most scams begin with deceptive advertisements on social media platforms, luring victims to invest in cryptocurrency through illegitimate investment firms. Once the funds are transferred, victims find themselves unable to retrieve their money.
The South Bruce OPP is urging residents to exercise extreme caution before engaging in cryptocurrency investments. They recommend thoroughly researching any investment firm and consulting with a financial institution or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) to avoid falling prey to these schemes.
If you have information related to these scams, you are encouraged to contact the South Bruce OPP at 1-888-310-1122. For those who wish to remain anonymous, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or through a secure web tip at www.cstip.ca. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
Authorities emphasize vigilance and education as key defenses against the growing threat of cryptocurrency fraud.
