OPP investigating Bitcoin scam in South Huron

Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a $9,800 scam targeting a retail employee in Exeter.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of December 28, 2024, when the employee received a text message from someone posing as their supervisor. The message instructed the employee to discreetly collect all cash on-site and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine in London.

Following the instructions, the employee deposited $9,800 before later realizing the request was fraudulent upon contacting their actual supervisor.

Huron OPP is urging anyone who has fallen victim to fraud to report it by calling 1-888-310-1122. Victims can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit antifraudcentre.ca for more information.
