Port Elgin crossing guard named one of Canada's favourite

A Port Elgin woman was recently named one of three of Canada’s Favourite Crossing guards for 2024.

Fay Eggleston was honoured for her work with Port Elgin Saugeen Central School.

The annual contest is run by Parachute, a national charity dedicated to injury prevention. This year saw 346 nominations for 59 crossing guards across four provinces.

Eggleston was highlighted for her willingness to go above and beyond, with one nomination sharing how she gave a pair of gloves to a child without any on a cold winter day.

"Fay’s warm smile and unwavering dedication make her a pillar of her community," read the release. "Fay is loved by both children and parents for her cheerful greetings, her care for their safety and her constant vigilance, regardless of the weather."

In honour of her recognition, $500 will be donated to Saugeen Central School.
