Bayfield community groups are asking for residents to turn out to the first council meeting of the new year, to advocate for a long-term solution to house the local food bank.
At the January 13 meeting, council for the Municipality of Bluewater is expected to approve a deal with a physician from Seaforth, who plans to turn the Bayfield Lions Club building into a much-needed medical clinic.
The building, which has been leased by the Lions from the municipality for 24 years, also hosts the Bayfield Area Food Bank.
Now, groups including the Lions, Food Bank and the Bayfield Ratepayers Association have proposed that initial proceeds from the sale of the building are used to relocate the Food Bank to a new facility.
"The Lions wholly support the addition of a medical practice in Bayfield," said Ian Matthew, President of the Bayfield Lions Club. "This is the highest and best use of the property as correctly decided by the Municipality. Our concern is for the Bayfield Food Bank and its continued support of families in need. The building was also widely used by the community, and we will assist all to meet their needs in the future... The proceeds of the sale represent that opportunity for Council."
According to Food Bank President Claire Trepanier, usage has grown from around 66 clients at the start of the year to over 100 by the end of 2024.
Residents are encouraged to attend the council meeting on January 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Varna Complex Council Chamber to advocate for this initiative.
