Long-Serving Bluewater Director of Education Announces Retirement

After nearly four decades of service in public education, Bluewater District School Board’s Director of Education, Lori Wilder, has announced her retirement. The news was shared during the board’s regular meeting on December 17, 2024, following the trustees’ acceptance of Wilder’s retirement letter earlier in the evening. Staff were informed in an email from Wilder later that night.

Wilder has served as Director of Education for the past five years, focusing on key initiatives such as diversity, equity, inclusion, student achievement in literacy and numeracy, fiscal responsibility, and multi-year strategic planning. Her extensive career also includes over a decade as superintendent of education, where her responsibilities spanned areas such as special education, mental health, skilled trades, and student athletics.

Throughout her career, Wilder has been a passionate advocate for safe and inclusive learning environments. Her efforts were instrumental in implementing Gender Sexuality Alliance groups in schools to support 2SLGBTQIA+ students. She also played a pivotal role in strengthening relationships with local First Nations communities and advancing Indigenous education.

Chair Jane Thomson praised Wilder’s contributions.

“We are tremendously thankful to Lori for her four decades of unwavering leadership, commitment, and service to the students, families, and school communities in our area. Her legacy and footprint are profound, particularly through the lasting positive impact she has made on student well-being, and her long career as a champion of marginalized and vulnerable students," Thomson said. "It is a bittersweet farewell as we wish her many rewarding and happy years in her well-earned retirement. I know that countless others join me, both past and present, in saying ‘thank you’ to Lori. Bluewater will look different without her, and her warm and thoughtful presence will be missed.”

Wilder expressed gratitude for her career and colleagues.

“Thank you to everyone for an unforgettable career as a teacher, school administrator, and member of the senior team. I am incredibly grateful to have spent my years surrounded by individuals dedicated to the happiness, safety, well-being, and success of children," Wilder added. "Our students are at the heart of everything we do! I appreciate the support I have received from staff, the wonderful senior team, colleagues, and the Board of Trustees during my tenure, and am proud of the many things we have accomplished together. These include our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring our finances are in order, and advancing our commitment to student achievement and well-being. I leave knowing that Bluewater’s future is positive and strong.”

Wilder’s final day with the board will be August 31, 2025. Plans to select her replacement will be announced in the coming months.
