Organizers of the new Huron Perth Flag Football league are looking to bring in even more kids ahead of their second season.
The league launched in Exeter this fall, playing and practicing on Saturday mornings.
David Levinson, who runs the league with his wife Melanie, said there was a great response on their initial run, with nearly 100 kids signed up.
"The feedback was really good, not just on the football itself but on the sportsmanship aspect," he said. "That was the one big thing we wanted to ensure when we started the league: we wanted people to play hard, have fun and take it seriously, but not too seriously. I think that showed throughout the season, the sportsmanship between the players."
Levinson said they also put some of the feedback from parents and players into action during the season, extending game time and bringing in better speakers for the warm up music.
With kids travelling from all over Huron County to play, Levinson said it was a successful first season, now they're hoping to garner more interest over the winter.
The league will hold skill sessions at Between the Lines in Listowel to help players hone their skills before the spring season starts in April.
"The idea of those winter skills days are just for kids to come out and have fun," said Levinson. "We're going to be coaching throwing, catching, running routes, defense, flag pulling, all the basics fundamentals of flag football. They don't need any experience, doesn't matter if they played in our league this past year or not, the more the merrier."
Dates for the sessions are January 17, February 21, and March 14. Sessions cost $20 each or $50 for all three.
The spring season will start in April, but there's a deal on registration for anyone who signs up before the end of 2024.
Levinson says they'd always welcome more volunteers too. Anyone interested in lending a hand coaching or refereeing can reach out to him by email.
