The Township of Perth South has appointed a new Mayor following the passing of Jim Aitcheson.
Aitcheson passed away on November 21, and since then, Deputy Mayor Sue Orr has served as acting Mayor. On Tuesday morning, she was appointed to the position by council.
Former Mayor and veteran Council Member Bob Wilhelm introduced the motion to appoint Deputy Mayor Orr.
"While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Mayor Aitcheson, we are confident that Mayor Orr will continue his legacy of service and dedication to our Township," said Councillor Wilhelm. "Her vision and leadership will be invaluable as we move forward."
In a media release, the Township said Orr's leadership and commitment to the community have been evident throughout her tenure, and she is well-prepared to guide South Perth through this transition.
"It is an honor to be appointed as Mayor of the Township of Perth South," said Mayor Orr. "I am committed to working tirelessly for our community and continuing the work that Mayor Aitcheson started. Together, we will navigate this challenging time and build a brighter future for all residents."
The appointment creates a new vacancy on council, which the members proposed to address at the next meeting on December 17.
A celebration of life for the late Mayor Aitcheson will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at the Downie Optimist Community Center from 1 to 4 p.m.
