OPP urge school bus safety after Meaford collision

Ontario Provincial Police in Grey Bruce are reminding drivers to prioritize safety around school buses after an incident in Meaford.

On November 18, 2024, OPP say a vehicle rear-ended a bus on Highway 26 after that bus had stopped for another bus with its stop arm out and red lights flashing. No injuries were reported. A 31-year-old faces a charge for careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

OPP want to emphasize that flashing amber lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop, and drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm mean drivers in both directions must come to a complete stop until the lights stop flashing, or the bus moves.

Failing to obey these rules can lead to significant penalties. First-time offenders face fines ranging from $490 to $2,000 and six demerit points. Repeat offenders can face fines of up to $4,000, six demerit points, and potential jail time.
