Grey Bruce youth to take action for the climate

A conference planned in Owen Sound is expected to encourage over 125 students from across Grey and Bruce Counties to take climate action.

The third annual Youth Climate Action Conference takes place on Thursday, November 7 at the Harmony Centre.

The day long session will involve over 125 Grade 6, 7, and 8 students and 30 educators from 25 schools across the region

It kicks off at 9 a.m. with a keynote address from students from Arran-Tara Elementary School who completed a Trees for Tara tree planting project after last year’s conference.

Over the course of the day, students will participate in hands-on workshops facilitated by a range of organizations, including the Lake Huron Coastal Centre, Green Learning, Nuclear Innovation Institute, and The Sustainability Project.

Students will then plan their school and community action projects, which they will share at the end of the day.

Teachers will participate in a full day of professional development facilitated by Learning for a Sustainable Future on how to connect climate to their curriculum.

The Sustainability Project and Learning for a Sustainable Future includes Grey County, Bluewater District School Board, Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board, and local climate action team volunteers

In March 2023, the inaugural conference brought together 50 students from Owen Sound schools at the Harmony Centre in Owen Sound. It was initiated by Bluewater educator Hilary Coburn.
