Petition opposes Blyth Library relocation

A concerned Blyth resident presented a petition to North Huron council, calling for the local library to stay where it is.

Kathryn Aires said she collected nearly 400 signatures from people concerned that council was exploring relocating the library to the second floor of the Blyth Community Hall and Arena.

The proposed move was outlined in North Huron's Strategic Plan as a possible cost-saving measure. The Township leases the current location for $18,000 a year.

Deputy Reeve Kevin Falconer suggested the petition was jumping the gun as council haven't received the report back that proposed using the Arena yet, which Aires pushed back on.

"I understand there's other avenues to look at, it's all part of the process for the proposal. But jumping ahead of the gun on a petition? Absolutely not," she said. "We have every right to voice our opinion prior to any input on this proposal. Because we want our voices heard, that when this proposal does go through all of its steps and it gets to a final decision, regardless of where it's put, we want our decision, and what we would like, taken seriously."

Council received the petition for information.
