North Huron not adding sound limits to noise by-law

North Huron will not be implementing any sound level limits in its noise by-law.

Council received a report from staff at Monday's meeting, which was prompted by a noise complaint last summer.

A report from staff showed that including decibel limits as part of the by-law would be costly and require more by-law officers to enforce.

Staff said the only municipality in the area that includes decibel limits in its noise by-law is Central-Huron, and they didn't respond to requests for more information

Councillor Anita van Hittersum said it's unfortunate for the person who complained, but pursuing a sound limit wasn't feasible.

"This whole thing was based on one complaint about a generator going for 20 minutes once a week," she said. "I think every complaint should be taken seriously, but it's a part of life that sometimes things are bothersome."

Despite the recommendation in the report, Councilor Mitch Wright said staff should keep working to find another solution.

"Option 1 basically says, we're going to allow noise pollution in our municipality and not do anything about it," he said. "I have a hard time with that option. I think there's other options than the two presented, we just need to give staff the time to look at those."

Council voted in favour of staff's recommendation, to keep the noise by-law as is.
