Southampton landfill options outlined in terms of reference

The Town of Saugeen Shores has released the draft terms of reference for its Environmental Assessment to deal with the diminishing capacity at the Southampton Landfill.

The draft terms of reference outline three alternatives to address the Town’s future waste management needs, as projections suggest the current landfill will hit capacity sometime between 2030 and 2032.

The proposed alternatives for the EA are: optimize the landfill capacity at the existing site, export the waste with a third party or do nothing. Staff said that after assessment, it was recommended that establishing a new landfill and alternative waste management technologies not be pursued as alternatives.

The Town is now seeking public feedback on the terms of reference, which can be provided by mail, or online at Engage Saugeen Shores.

Staff will be making a presentation at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on October 28.

The deadline for comments to be provided is November 22.
