Bruce County is moving forward with a commemorative signage project to honour the 160th Bruce Battalion along County Road 19, now known as the "Highway for Peace."
The project, initiated after a public delegation in May, will see eight custom signs installed along the road, with completion targeted before Remembrance Day on November 11, 2024.
The project was outlined in a report presented to the council on October 3, 2024, detailing the history behind the initiative which began after Mr. William Streeter's presentation that urged the county to recognize the sacrifices of the 160th Bruce Battalion.
The signs will be strategically placed at both entrances to County Road 19 and spaced approximately every eight kilometers to ensure visibility from both directions.
The cost of the project is estimated at $3,500 plus HST, to be financed from the county’s Tax Stabilization Reserve (TSR). The TSR balance is expected to be just under $3 million at the end of 2024.
Council aims to complete the project in time for the upcoming Remembrance Day, ensuring the signs are in place to serve as a visual reminder of the county's historical significance and the ongoing dedication to commemorating the sacrifices made by local soldiers during the First World War.
