Final household hazardous waste collection of the year goes Saturday

Bruce County will be holding its final household hazardous waste collection event of the year this weekend.

Ahead of the event, residents are encouraged to clear hazardous waste materials such as paints and propane tanks from their homes and garages. They can then bring those items to the collection event at the Southampton Works Yard at 429 Peel St. in Southampton from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Items classified as household hazardous waste that will be accepted includes paints and stains, propane tanks, used oil, aerosols, batteries, antifreeze, oil filters, solvents, household cleaners, fluorescent lights, fertilizers, fuel, pharmaceuticals, fire extinguishers, pesticides, and pool chemicals. The full list of acceptable waste can be found online at www.brucecounty.on.ca/hazardouswaste.

Commercial waste, agricultural waste, industrial waste, PCB’s, ammunitions, and flares will not be accepted, the county reminded in a statement. The county also stated that only containers with a volume of 30 litres or less will be taken at the event and that containers will not be emptied and returned.

There have been 12 other hazardous waste collection events held across the county since May. Saturday's event in the final planned collection of the year.
