Contractor selected for New Durham ambulance base

Plans to rebuild the Paramedic Services Base in Durham have moved ahead as the current base reaches its end of life.

Grey County has awarded the design and construction tender for a replacement Paramedic Services Base in Durham to Domm Construction Ltd. at a cost of $2,415,500.

“Our paramedics play an important role in community healthcare. As a council, we understand the significance of investing in our emergency services for the safety and wellbeing of our residents,” said Grey County Warden Brian Milne. “With rising call volumes amplifying the need for stronger and faster medical response times, Grey County is taking proactive steps to maintain service levels.”

The Paramedic Services Comprehensive Deployment Review 2023 to 2033 recommended the construction of a new paramedic base in the town of Durham.

Staff reviewed the situation, and decided an ideal location would be next to the new West Grey Police Services building, off Chester Street and Grey Road 4.

The Municipality of West Grey sold the property to the county for $150,000. Funding for the project comes from the Durham base reserve, land ambulance development charges and a debenture.

Construction of a road and services for the property is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

The base is being designed with energy efficiency in mind in alignment with the Grey Count Climate Change Action Plan. Applications for funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) have been submitted, and if successful will allow for the Paramedic Base to be fully net zero (through the addition of solar panels added to the roof, etc.) while still ensuring that the overall project comes in under budget.

Domm Construction built the Arnott General Store in Moreston Heritage Village at Grey Roots Museum and Archives in 2023, and the county was pleased with the results.
