Grey Bruce Family Safety Day planned for community

The Community Safety and Well Being Planning Crime Prevention Action Table in Grey Bruce is working with the Saugeen Valley Children’s Safety Village and the Rotary Club of Walkerton to offer a Family Safety Day this Saturday, August 24, 2024.

The Chair of the Crime Prevention Table, West Grey Police Chief Robert Martin, says they are planning internet safety lessons, and road safety sessions for children up to age eleven.

"It'll be covering such things as road safety and focus on internet safety. There'll be our police instructors there," Martin explained. "The interactive sessions with road safety include driving the mini cars and scooter safely. The internet safety plan is for parents and guardians, and Crime Stoppers and Victim Services will be there, as well, providing information with the services they have available. The best part is, we do have a free barbecue and goody bag for the kids to take home."

The day will start at 10 a.m. at Saugeen Valley Children’s Safety Village located in the Sulphur Springs Conservation Area south of Hanover.

Martin said the road safety and internet safety sessions will be a great back to school refresher for children and their families.

"Just to make sure that the kids understand rules, regulations of the roads, how to cross roads, how to be safe on our highways," he continued. "And internet safety. We know kids will be going to school with phones, and with those phones come all kinds of opportunities and things like that. We just want to make sure that the children in our communities have the knowledge to understand what can happen to them and what to do if bad things do ever happen to them."

Families will have the opportunity to engage with Crime Stoppers Grey Bruce and Victim Services Bruce Grey to learn about their programs and services.

"As the Crime Prevention Table, one of our target areas, is road safety. It's been identified by our partners in our community that road safety is very important," Martin pointed out. "And it helps us get our message out for road safety, and get a very clear, concise, and unified message out to our community."

The event will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with sessions starting at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.

People should pre-register for the event here.
