The Local Community Food Centre in Stratford has kicked off a major fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $750,000 by next summer to continue supporting the people of Perth County.
Local businesses Shackleton’s Real Estate & Auction Co. and KDB Law jumpstarted the effort with a combined donation of $100,000. Amid rising food insecurity and financial stress, the demand for Food Centre's services has surged.
Campaign Chair Brent Shackleton emphasized the importance of the centre’s programs, from fresh food markets to community suppers, in creating a sense of belonging and advocating for social justice.
“From the fresh food markets to the community suppers, The Local plays an important role in our community and we need it to be sustainable in the long term," he said. "The Local gives people access to healthy food, creates a sense of belonging, and is also an advocate for issues related to social justice. I’m proud to support such an integral part of our community.”
In 2023, The Local CFC served nearly 14,000 meals and provided over 700 bags of fruit to people in need. The funds raised will help sustain essential services, upgrade kitchen equipment, and establish a reserve fund for future needs.
Board Chair Katie DeBlock Boersma highlighted the need for accessible, nutritious food in the farming community.
“Everyone has the right to healthy, nutritious food at accessible prices. We live in a farming community, yet people are not often getting the food they need, which is why the weekly meals, accessible food markets, and urban gardens provided by The Local are so vitally important. I’m honoured to be able to help The Local meet the rising need in our community for affordable and quality food,” she said.
