Minto to host special Indigenous cultural event

Minto will be hosting a special event celebrating Indigenous people this month.

On Wednesday, September 25 from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Harriston-Minto Community Complex in Harriston, members of the public are invited to come and celebrate Indigenous culture, and Marketing and Community Development Coordinator, Erin Raftis, says the event will feature special guests.

"It's gonna feature the stories and music of Christin Dennis, a Chippewa Knowledge Carrier, flautist, storyteller and artist. He's gonna share stories about his heritage and play some music for us," Raftis explained. "Also included in the ticket to the event, we will get to try sweetgrass ice cream, which is a creation by an Owen Sound chef, Zach Keeshig, who is a pioneer/educator of progressive indigenous cuisine. So we are very excited to try that, too."

This is the next event in Minto's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee's “Cultural Connections: A Diversity Learning Series” that aims to educate and celebrate Minto's diverse community.

Raftis adds the committee wanted to do something special to honour Indigenous people in the community and beyond.

"We've been trying to get together an Indigenous event for a few years because it's an important month to celebrate, so we're just excited to be able to participate this year and kind of give back and pay respect to the Indigenous people," said Raftis.

Tickets to this event cost only $10, and space is limited so those interested are encouraged to register by September 17 at the latest.

To purchase tickets, visit www.town.minto.on.ca/calendar or purchase in-person at the Town of Minto administrative office, Launchit in Harriston, Clifford Country Store or the Palmerston Home Hardware.
