The celebrations for the Mitchell 150 festivities are well underway.
The Mitchell Golf and Country Club played host to the golf tournament, organized by the Mitchell Steelers slo-pitch club, on July 31. Joe McCreight, a Mitchell Steeler and chair of the Mitchell 150 golf tournament, says it's amazing to see all the planning for Mitchell 150 come together and pay off for the community all week.
"It's great to see all the volunteer efforts come to fruition. The weather's been great, a lot of out of town faces and people in town supporting, we had a great turnout and a great day, and we're looking forward to kicking off the week with this event, so we appreciate everybody coming and all the hard work that's went into this whole week of events," McCreight shared.
McCreight, a lifelong Mitchell native, says being part of the Mitchell 150 festivities is very special.
"It's a cool experience for sure. I've lived in Mitchell my whole life, excluding when I went to school, so 40 years here. It's been cool to see the community grow and advance. It's just awesome to have everybody back, some familiar faces from high school, and older people out here playing, too, it's just a great mix," said McCreight.
In terms of visitors, returning Mitchell folks and everyone else who attends any Mitchell 150 events, McCreight says he hopes everyone in town this week embraces the hometown Mitchell Pride and enjoys the community coming together.
"Hopeful that they're having fun coming back to their roots, seeing some friends and family. There's a good fundraising effort that's been put together for the new Ketterson Park Pavilion that's going up. I'm just hopeful that everyone recognizes all the efforts of all the people behind the scenes, there've been a lot of people putting this together," added McCreight.
The Mitchell 150 celebrations carry right through the upcoming long weekend. Details on events and the schedule can be found here: https://www.westperth.com/en/my-west-perth/mitchell-150.aspx.
