South Bruce OPP and a Good Samaritan rescued a boater whose vessel began taking on water after hitting a rock off the coast of Kincardine.
Police were called about the boat in distress in the Kincardine Harbour around 12:50 p.m. on Sunday. The vessel reportedly lost power after hitting the rock. The occupants issued a distress call and the South Bruce OPP Marine Unit, along with a Good Samaritan, towed the boat back to the safety of the Kincardine Marina.
No one was hurt during the ordeal, police said.
The incident was the second involving a boat in distress within a matter of days.
On Thursday afternoon, OPP were called about a sailboat that had come close to shore after smashing into the rocks in Lake Huron near Saugeen Shores. According to police, the boat was in danger of tipping over. Emergency crews rescued the lone occupant of the boat, who was looked over by paramedics as a precaution.
Police advise those heading out onto the water to download Canada's Safe Boating Guide and keep the required safety equipment on board. Required equipment includes lifejackets, reboarding device, buoyant heaving line, manual bilge pump, and flares.
"What you need to carry varies by vessel / vessel length, but it's imperative that you ensure you have the required safety equipment on board before you leave the dock," police said. "The time to find out it's lacking, is not when you need it most."
