OPP warn local banks of potential passport scam

Huron County OPP say local banks should be on the lookout after a man reportedly tried to open an account with fake documents on Tuesday.

Police say they were called to a financial institution in Wingham on Tuesday for a report of a suspicious person around 3:30 p.m.

According to police, bank staff said that the man had attempted to open a bank account using a passport from a foreign country along with immigration papers and other documents.

The man alleged that he lived and worked locally, but a check by bank staff showed that the residential address he provided didn't exist. They also discovered he wasn't employed at the local business he claimed.

When confronted, the man fled the bank, leaving some of the documents behind.

Police say they confirmed the suspect's passport was fake with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

The matter is still under investigation, and the suspect has still not been identified.

OPP are contacting local banks to make them aware of this issue. They encourage financial institutions to contact them if a similar situation arises at 1-888-310-1122.
