UPDATE: Man charged in series of Goderich crashes, break-ins

A 32-year-old man is facing a slew of charges after a series of crashes and break-ins in Goderich.

According to Huron County OPP, the bizarre incident took place early Friday morning with the first call to OPP coming in around 3 a.m.

Officers responded to an erratic driver complaint near Elgin Avenue, and located an abandoned damaged pickup truck on Kingston Street.

While trying to figure out where the truck came from, police say they found a second damaged vehicle in the parking lot of a car dealership on Bayfield Road. The business has also been broken into and "heavily damaged."

Responding officers said they observed another vehicle being driven away from the lot speeding northbound on Bayfield Road.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it began travelling in the wrong direction on the Goderich Square, at which point it sped away onto Elgin Ave and collided with five more parked cars.

OPP allege the man assaulted officers while being placed under arrest. The man was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police estimate the damage caused exceeds $500,000.

The 32-year-old of no fixed address faces charges including three counts of theft of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, failing to stop after an accident, assaulting an officer, possession of methamphetamine, and dangerous operation.

He was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.
