Egg-cellent new Georgian Bluffs bylaw allows for backyard hens

A new Georgian Bluffs by-law is certainly not "for the birds," as it will allow residents to house chickens on their property.

According to a release from the township, the by-law was put into place thanks to "enthusiastic community feedback."

It will allow for residentially zoned properties that are at least half-an-acre to keep up to six hens. Roosters are not permitted.

The Township stressed that chickens must be for personal, not commercial, use. Owners are not allowed to sell eggs or chickens, and home slaughtering is also barred.

Finally, chicken coops must be at least 10 metres away from neighbouring homes.

Georgian Bluffs says beyond eggs, chickens offer benefits as a natural pest control, as well as providing excellent fertilizer.
