Humane Society to host walk-in adoption event as Stratford-Perth centre reaches capacity

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth (HSKWSP) will hold a critical walk-in adoption event on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 as both its Stratford and Kitchener centres have reached full capacity.

With nearly 200 animals in its care and an additional 63 on the surrender list waiting for help, the HSKWSP is urging the community to adopt or become foster caregivers. Chief Executive Officer of the HSKWSP, Victoria Baby, hopes the community will choose adoption this week and help them find homes for the pets in their care.

"If you cannot adopt, we encourage families to open their hearts and homes and become foster parents. A foster home significantly decreases a pet’s stress and anxiety, and having a family to care for them in a home environment ensures their overall happiness," she said.

The need for foster families is especially urgent in the Stratford-Perth area. Volunteer foster caregivers provide temporary homes for animals until they find their forever homes, and the HSKWSP supplies all necessities required for fostering a pet.

The walk-in adoption event will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Stratford Perth Humane Society (125 Griffith Road, Stratford) and the Kitchener Waterloo Humane Society (250 Riverbend Dr, Kitchener). No appointments are necessary, and regular appointments will be paused to accommodate walk-ins throughout the event. The aim is to facilitate same-day adoptions.

Adoption fees will be reduced for some adult dogs and cats to expedite finding them homes. Adoption fees for adult dogs and cats include spay/neuter surgery, parasite treatment, microchip, vaccines, and the first order of food.

The HSKWSP also has over 20 kittens available for adoption for those looking to add a young feline to their family.
