Perth County mourns former Warden

The Perth County Courthouse flag will be lowered all weekend to honour a former Warden and Councillor who passed away this week.

Robert “Bob” McTavish died on June 25 at the age of 91.

McTavish began his political career in 1985, getting elected to North Easthope Council, before becoming Reeve in 1988.

He served as the Perth County Warden from December 1992 to December 1993.

After that, he was Mayor of Perth East from 200 to 2006, before becoming a councillor from 2006 to 2010.

In a statement, current Perth County Warden Rhonda Ehgoetz said McTavish made a big impact locally.

"As Warden, Bob was an outspoken advocate for collaboration and cooperation amidst local municipalities," wrote Ehgoetz. "His commitment at the County and Lower Tier levels as an elected official demonstrates how profound, dedicated and accomplished Bob’s impact was on the Perth County community."

She also said his notable accomplishments as Warden included contributing to the rural 911 emergency system, navigating provincial grant cuts while establishing a balanced budget, and supporting the “Building Fund” of the Stratford General Hospital.

Perth County will keep the Courthouse flag lowered until the day of McTavish's funeral, which takes place Wednesday, July 3 at the Shakespeare Presbyterian Church.
