United Way Bruce Grey is asking anyone interested to register now for the annual Backpack Program.
Fundraising Champion, Kristy Andre, says the program has been going for 20 years, and donations from the community have allowed them to help a lot of local families and students.
"United Way Bruce Grey has been able to give out 35,278 fully stocked backpacks. Last year we gave out 2,470, which is the most we've done ever. We're encouraging people to register as soon as they can, just so we can get a head-start on the numbers," Andre explained.
Andre says the backpacks are fully kitted with brand new school supplies to help out low-income families and the students in their homes. There are a number of ways to donate to the program to help ensure all local students can be successful.
"You can donate money by going to Backpacks4kids.ca and go through the online portal that gives you an instant tax receipt. We're also accepting new supplies, as well. You can drop them off at our office at 380 9th Street East in Owen Sound. There's also a Stuff the Bus event in August, the 15-17, in Owen Sound at Staples," added Andre.
With the most ever backpacks handed out in one year in 2023, Andre says clearly the need for the backpacks remains dire and is increasing.
"Things are tough out there, and this program allows families to maybe invest in other things for their students in their households and not have to worry about picking up that backpack," she shared. "When you show up and you have everything that you need, it just improves a student's mental health, it allows them to not concentrate on what they're missing out on, and focus on their education."
The fundraising goal for the program this year is $90,000.
"To register for the program, just reach out to 211 on your phone, there's a little bit of a survey you have to answer, and we will reach out to you when it's time to pick up your backpack," Andre concluded.
Andre adds that United Way is celebrating the arrival of Nolan Taylor as the new Backpack Program Coordinator, bringing a deep commitment to community service.
"I am excited to join the United Way Bruce Grey team and look forward to working with our community to support local students," said Taylor.
