Summer safety top of mind for South Bruce OPP

The countdown is on for students in Midwestern Ontario, as another school year is winding down.

That has prompted the South Bruce OPP to issue a safety reminder to motorists.

OPP expect an increase in the amount of pedestrian traffic as scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, and bicycles take to the streets and sidewalks.

Caregivers are also asked to discuss acceptable internet usage and water safety with children.

"Our officers will be actively on patrol engaging with youth in various municipalities this summer," said South Bruce OPP Staff Sgt. Deb McClure. "We hope to spread a further awareness about the importance of wearing safety equipment through positive interactions"

According to South Bruce OPP, bicycle helmets are required by law and reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 per cent, when worn properly.

McClure added drivers should slow down and take care on the roads, especially near parks and recreation centres. Everyone should use crosswalks or intersections to cross streets safely. Swimmers must be property supervised, as well as children who are online.

Parents and care givers are asked to review safety rules with their youth. Summertime may be a break from learning, but it can't be a break from safety.
