Local students start 47 new businesses

The Saugeen Student Start-Up Program with Saugeen Connects is helping 51 students start 47 various businesses this summer.

The Student Start-Up Program is made possible thanks to member municipalities and by acquiring private sector funding, and this year Saugeen Connects has raised a total of $24,450.

Over five years, the program has provided over 250 students with the necessary start-up funding, interactive training, and workshops needed to try entrepreneurship over the summer months.

This summer's start-ups include body scrubs, natural lip balm, traditional Chinese dumplings, homemade crepes, beeswax lunch pouches, freeze dried candy, and horse treats.

The Saugeen Student Start-Up Program (SSUP) is offered to students in grades 6 to 12 in the seven member municipalities of Brockton, Hanover, Minto, Wellington North, West Grey, Arran-Elderslie, and South Bruce.

The program is supported by Bruce County, Grey County, Saugeen Economic Development Corporation, and Wellington County.

Participants are expected to participate at local Farmer’s Markets, at the student vendor markets at the Hanover Fair August 10 and 11, and at the Hanover Raceway on August 31, 2024.

Four students are from Brockton; Dashiel Slosser-McLean, Ava Emke, Dillon Moran and Madison Johns.
